I’ve spent many a blissful summer day at Devil’s Lake State Park (near Baraboo, WI), but this was my first winter visit. Strange to walk out over the surface of the lake. Devil’s Lake is a glacial feature. Its quartzite hills stood up to the last ice age, leaving the bluffs on either side and carving the lake out in the middle. The sides of the bluffs are littered with glacial outwash – boulders and ankle-busters – fun for climbing.
Devil’s Lake is one of the prettiest lakes you’ll ever visit. The water is clear and inviting – you can see the bottom in deep water. The north shore is one of my favorite spots in Wisconsin.
Today I can’t see the bottom though. Only the surface, covered in a blanket of winter snow and ice. Funny, there aren’t as many people here as there are on a hot, summer day.
One famous person is immortalized in this shot. The second must be lurking behind the rocks.
