Laura and I lived in the area for years but we’d never discovered Torpedo Wharf before today. We happened to visit on one of the most perfect days we’ve ever seen in San Francisco. Torpedo Wharf is Laura’s new favorite spot. How is it we never found this place in all our years in the Bay Area?
Torpedo Wharf is part of the Crissy Field complex, which is part of the larger Presidio of San Francisco. The wharf juts out into San Francisco Bay, and offers stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city, Alcatraz everything the Bay has to offer. Plus, the rangers on duty will help you net crabs. There was a crowd of kids crabbing the day we were there.
There isn’t agreement on why this is called Torpedo Wharf. An archaic meaning of “torpedo” is a stationery mine. It’s also a genus of ray. Who knows? It rolls off the tongue easily, and it sounds dangerous. Kids love it, and we do too.
Though one was standing right next to me, no famous people are immortalized in this shot.
