Poros is a leisurely ferry ride from the ancient port of Piraeus, and after the cab ride from Athens to Piraeus, I needed a nice, leisurely boat ride. Across the Aegean and nearly rubbing elbows with the Peloponnese, Poros is charming and not accessible to the cruise boats. This is why we are here. Off the ferry, we ask the nearest cab driver to take us to the nearest beach. It turns out to be Kanali, which will do just fine.
The air temperature is hot. Really hot. The water, in contrast, is not. We’re not talking Sheldon Leonard-level cold here, but it’s very refreshing given the heat. There are two cafés up the beach with decent local food and drinks. Life is good.
Across the bay, there is a Medieval star-shaped fort ruin. The water is Aegean-blue. The sky is doing its best to match. The beach sand is ideal for toe-squishing. There are lots of families here with kids happily playing in the water. It’s quiet. It’s the kind of day that defines vacations.
Three famous people are immortalized in this shot.
