The Fort Morgan casemates were originally designed to protect cannon, but they were rarely used for anything more than storage of goods and sometimes housing for soldiers. These days, they look like human-made caverns, complete with water seepage and stalagmites on the floor. Creepy and colorful, they’re a lot of fun to explore. Coming in from the bright sunlight makes them all the more dark and mysterious. There were loads of people all around me, and I wasn’t trying to keep them out of the shot. It just came out empty.
Fort Morgan is an 1830s fortress at the mouth of Mobile Bay. The architecture looks very much like Fort Mason in San Francisco, which was constructed around the same time. The views of Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico are fantastic from the fort.
