Bascom Hall, on the University of Wisconsin campus, is almost as recognizable as Bucky Badger. Bascom Hall is fronted by a statue of Abraham Lincoln, which is a popular photo destination for visitors and students alike.
Built in 1857, Bascom Hall was renovated and expanded many times before reaching its current grandeur. The building sported two different styles of dome in the 19th century, The second dome was lost to a fire in 1916 and not rebuilt. Today, Bascom Hall houses many of the UW’s lofty administrative offices: Chancellor, Provost, Dean of Students, etc.
Bascom Hall tops Bascom Hill, a lovely grass slope that overlooks State Street and the Wisconsin Capitol. In warmer weather, the grass is a great place to take a rest between classes. In the winter, there is a long tradition of sledding down its sidewalks on food-service trays. (I enjoyed both of these pastimes in my undergraduate days.)
On this day, fall is close to done. It’s windy, and most of the pretty leaves have been blown off the trees. There’s a football game going at Camp Randall, and depending on the wind direction I am either hearing leaves rustle or Badger fans cheering. Go Bucky!
