We visited Arlington National Cemetery on a balmy November afternoon. It’s a powerful experience to walk the grounds and take in all the monuments. The Tomb of the Unknowns is quite touching. It’s a moving experience we should all have at least once. Likewise, there’s an eternal flame that commemorates the death of a murdered president.
All told, there are over 400,000 people buried here at Arlington. Before we invade another country or get involved in another war, our leaders should come here and spend a day reading the names on the gravestones. They should reflect on the names and sheer number of war dead here.
This panorama was taken below the Tomb of the Unknowns, at the overlook. There is a fountain, and beautiful vista of the monuments in Washington, DC, across the river. No famous people are immortalized in this shot, but the memories of many many important people are.
