Ending our Grand Canyon view in the same place we got our first view – Lipan Point. Convinced by another father and son that the best view from Lipan Point was from an outcropping involving a modest climb, we set off. We’ll see how I do with a tripod and a ten year old. Even […]
Hermit’s Rest, Grand Canyon
Hermit’s Rest is as far west as we could get in the park without a back-country permit. It’s only accessible by walking or taking the shuttle buses from downtown Grand Canyon.
Hopi Point, Grand Canyon
Hopi Point is another of the fantastic lookouts along the route from downtown Grand Canyon to Hermit’s Rest. After a couple days looking at these vistas, my brain overloads and I start looking at the micro rather than the macro.
Powell Point, Grand Canyon
Riding the Hermit Road shuttle bus on our way to Hermit’s Rest, Powell Point is our first jump-off. There is a nice family from Texas enjoying the view when we arrive – they are much further out on the point of Powell Point than I can manage. By the time I get set up to […]
Devil’s Lake State Park
I’ve spent many a blissful summer day at Devil’s Lake State Park (near Baraboo, WI), but this was my first winter visit. Strange to walk out over the surface of the lake.
Ice Fishing on Monona Bay
It seems to me that ice fishing on Monona Bay starts each winter before the ice is thick enough. But no one seems to fall through, so I guess I should stop worrying. But standing on the surface of frozen water is one of the miracles of science I love most. (Another being airplanes.) It’s […]
Hoyt Park Fog
We are very fortunate to live so close to Hoyt Park, the gem of near west Madison. Hoyt park was designated a City of Madison Landmark on October 2, 1995. Its origins can be traced to the Madison Park and Pleasure Drive Association founded in the late 19th century.
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden
It was a beautiful fall day, and the kids didn’t much like the idea of being indoors at the Walker Art Center, so we stayed outside and goofed off in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden next door. Anchored by the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry by Claes Oldenburg, the Sculpture Garden has lots of space for the young’uns to run around, plus ducks. There’s also a conservatory, although I prefer the one at Como Park across the river in St. Paul.
The Broadmoor
Located in the Cleveland Park neighborhood of Washington, DC, the Broadmoor is an Art Deco standout among many high-rise residential buildings along Connecticut Avenue. Designed by Joseph H. Abel, and completed in 1929, the Broadmoor is nestled against Rock Creek Park. Considered far out of town when it was built, this beautiful building is now […]
